I was thinking about my guitars, past and present. Why not get a discussion going about this. How about you? Starting with your present guitar(s) list the pros and cons and then list the guitars you’ve owned in the past with the same pros and cons and some associated memories.
My current guitar is a Royal Blue Ibanez RG321.
Pros
- 24 Jumbo frets
- fast action
- light weight
- great overall tones for all styles of music that I play
- inexpensive
Cons
- None - I love this guitar.
Guitars from the Past
Les Paul Custom
Pros - Great deep rounded clean tones for the blues. An investment!
Cons - H-E-A-V-Y, expensive.
Memories - Sold to take care of daughters medical bills. Well worth it.
Gibson SG
Pros - Without a doubt the best guitar I ever owned or played. I still get teary eyed when I think about getting rid of it. Traded up to the Les Paul. Big mistake.
Cons - None! My all time favorite guitar.
Memories - The guitar I owned when I met my wife. Used to serenade her with this guitar. I guess it worked, we have been together for 31 years.
Fender Stratocaster
Pros - Tones that you can only get with a Strat because of the “out of phase” pickup wiring. Fast action.
Cons - I had a real problem with the placement of the volume control. I do a lot of string muting and even heavy strumming and the volume control always got in my way.
Memories - I used to think Jimi Hendrix was a god. I know now there is only one true God. But Hendrix is still at the top of my list for guitarist. This is why I had to own a Strat. Then there was Clapton doing blues on the Strat and this list goes on. I bought the Strat and a Cry Baby Wah and thought I would be the next Hendrix. I was young and I guess it is good to dream.

WOW,cool topic,,guitars have been a part of my life for over 40 years..I have had at one time just about every make and model thats came down the pike…from Balwin/Mosrite/Daneletro/Gibson sg/melody maker/lp/175/335.Fender,all of um.Peavey/Carvin/Ibanez,rg321,s470qt Artcore,rgt3021w/utra 1 peice neck.. and many not listed here. They all had pros and cons..some played great, some sounded great, some looked great..some i wish i had kept.Presently i have 7 gtrs,,4 electric,2 acoustic,1 bass.. I plan on getting at least one guitar a year till im dead…And your right about Jimi,,he is the man,,you dont hear Hendrix, you fell him…peace out…stratoace

I would like to mention something else..tho i keep 7 gtrs ready to play, on stands, pluged in,,some others i have put away in their cases and rotate them into the line up..diffrent gtrs do make me play diffrent stuff and styles, and its neat to play one you havent played in 4 or 5 months,,kicks in the creative juices…A cool thing ive been doing for a lond time is with my strats ive got multiple pick guards with p.ups/controls mounted and wired, with quik conect ends on the grd. and jack wires,,so when i change strings i can change motors in a snap..no soldering,snap/unsnap and go…at this time ive got 3 of um fitted with 1. fender/2. emg/3. mixed[duncan, dimiz, fender]…no 5 way switch,i got 3 mini toggels in a off/on config. so i can get all 7 combo.of all 3 pickups…man, ive hogged the blog way too much…forgive me my friends…peace…strats

Don’t worry about being a blog hog. That is why I put it here, to give fellow guitarist a way to share info, tips, tricks or whatever they have on their mind. I think your point about playing a different guitar to force you to think about how you play is a very valid point. I know when I play my guitar synth I have to play much cleaner than I do when I am just playing my guitar. Plus I think, “OK, how would a sax player play a fill right here?”
Playing differnt genres of music also will assist in the thinking process about how I play.

Guitar synths are pretty cool..i had a G.R30 for 44 days[took it back to sam ash music on the 45 day befor the return limit..some amazing sounds, once masterd it could be a powerfull sonic tool, possibiltys are endless, with the two outs,gtr/synth…i couldnt justify the cost at the tine, but its still on my list i will get one sometime/somewhere/somehow…peace…strats

I have always owned 1 guitar at a time. Just one. I have pretty much owned them all…….except for anything Gibson. I find the necks uncomfortable.
Being a big Van Halen fan I am into the Peavey Wolfgang. But recently I have been getting into Schecter Guitars, and own a C-! Exotic. What I like about it is the versatility. It has 2 independant volume pots, and coil splitter/tone. The thing does strat to hell and back.
I like pretty much anything line 6 or behringer make for amps. I am a fan of getting as much as i can from one box, so those amps fit the bill. Although Marshall does have a combo with effects built in….I think it is a MGFX or some;thing like that. I kick ass too……..but has no clean sound of any value.
COOL SITE DOLAN!!!! Take care guys……

Well..i got me a Roland GR33 guitar synth….and a Brian Moore synth ready gtr…first let me say a few words about the B.M gtr…it is a great guitar on its own…workmanship/fit,finnish are all excellent..mahogany body/carved flamed maple top/m.neck w/rosewood board..15 inch fretboard radias, nice and flat like i like um…2 h.buckers..Duncan/Moore design..good even responce…Now the gr33…..I love this thing…the tracking is very fast due to the B.M gtrs pieso pickup system..there is no lag from the synth waiting for the vibration cycle of the string to trigger the sound like you get on a external p.up ..ie..roland divided gk 1/2…the pieso elements are under each string at the saddle..thus a tighter string movement which triggers the gr 33 most quickly..i got the dvd video tutorial also which is very helpfull, and will shorten the learning curve alot…the 128 presets and 300 plus tones will provide much enjoyment im sure..the presets can be access thru the gtr as well as synth volume and blend/synth only/gtr only/gtr and synth.and with the gtr only out on th gr33 you have many signal routing options…im in for some fun times here folks…peace,,,Dave
