I sent the initial email to Sonoma Wire Works (SWW) today which begins the crossgrade journey. This initial email is required to get a redemption code from SWW so I can purchase v2 standard at a discount. Sonoma calls it a crossgrade because the earlier version of Riffworks (RW) was directly tied to Line 6 hardware. I could still upgrade to the Line 6 edition and save $30. But, I think this is a good time to gain some flexibility in recording.

I add also purchased some Instant Drummers from Line 6 which has to have something done with them so they will work in v2. The Instant Drummer purchase info was also included in the email.

I will update the progress of this process in the comments of this post. I can’t wait to get the new version and start recording.

Well this is Tuesday, August 29th and I still haven’t heard anything from the SWW about purchasing RiffWorks Standard. I posted on their forums today under Customer Service to see if I can just get an update.

Got my redemption code today. I am currently downloading the new app and associated files.

I am a happy camper. Thank you Sonoma.

I am still waiting to hear about being able to use my old drummers that I purchased from Line 6 for v1.

Well, my happy camper status has been changed to camper. After having some time to play with v2, I have discovered that for some unknown reason, I am unable to to run v2 using ASIO4ALL as the sound driver. If I do not have my PodXTL connected via the USB port, v2 hangs everytime.

I thank all my fellow RiffWorkers that listened to my complaints and concerns about this and offered great suggestions and advice. I do feel that if I can only use this application with my Line 6 gear hooked to the computer, that I spent $30 to much.

According to this Sonoma document, “Windows XP ASIO Device Compatibility - RiffWorks Standard supports them all, Line 6 Edition now supports supports TonePort”. Maybe I don’t understand what they mean by ASIO device, all I know is ASIO does not work on my system.  The whole purpose of going with the Standard version, was so I could create, edit and mix without having to hook up my PodXTL.

After I get over my disappointment of not being able to utliize the stand alone ASIO capabilities of this program, I will post a complete review of program.

I figured out the problem with ASIO. My operating system is Windows Media Center with a TV Tuner. I had to disable the TV Tuner in order to get the ASIO driver to work. For me, this does not pose a big problem. It is easy enough to enable/disable the card.

Now I can work with the Instant Drummers and effects of previously recorded songs without having to hook up all my gear. Post-production just became much easier.

Something to say?
